Cops kill the 17 year old son of West Indian artist Spragga Benz

So the story goes, the police stop these two guys on a bike, one of the guys being Spragga Benz’s son Carlton Grant Jr., and one of the guys started firing! The cops shoot back and boom, Carlton is dead. SUCKS, but why the hell does this kid just have a gun, sheesh. I mean, I know his dad had a song titled “Love Mi Gun” but little man didn’t have to take it literally. I guess this is a justified killing? I hope the kids’ dad is doing alright.

They just keep getting younger and younger. UGH.

  • Antwan,

Please, let’s not rush to judge this bright young man as just some wayward, troublesome child. As it has been reported, yes one of the young men had a gun but it was not Spragga’s son who fired on police. When approached by the police, Carlton placed his hands in the air cooperating with police before the first shot was fired. This young man had just passed his CXC examination passing 5 subjects which to my understanding is above average and was well known in the neighborhood where he lived as a focused, lovable, conscientious young man with a good head on his shoulders. (Referenced article from 876radio.com)

If you know anything about JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force), there are not many occasions where they have “justified” killing. They just kill because they can.

    Blessed,

    Valencia

    • Antwan,

You joking about Carlton death as if it was meant to happen, he did everything the cops asked him to do and to fire and killing this 17 year old man aint no way in hell that a justified killing. I don’t believe Carlton who never been in trouble by the law would carry a gun just for fun, I don’t believe he would hang around with people who do. So I say you was wrong for even thinking like that. You must not know what his family is going through I know, cause I’ve lost my father a month before loosing my brother to gang violence. So please watch what comes out your mouth having death in ones family aint no laughing matter the shit really hurts.

  • Hello Valencia.

The statement about “Love Mi Gun” wasn’t to be taken literal, it was more of a pun on one of his father’s songs. What I don’t understand is why a 17 yr old is hanging out with someone that carries a gun in the first place. I’ve stories about Jamaica from my friends here in the states that used to live there, so I have a small understanding of the politics of the place, but still, having a gun in a place where the actual “law makers” aren’t so “law abiding” doesn’t seem like a good idea…

I think it stinks he got killed, 17 is just insane.
I never meant to make it seem as though he was killed and it’s fair and that’s that.

I believe what you say and that he was a bright young man, but if he knew about the gun his friend was carrying, that day he just made a bad decision.

    I’m glad you said something.

  • Hello, I am someone who knew Spragga’s son, and I am deeply saddened by the unjustified murder. The police are putting false reports in the media that they were fired upon first. What happened was that the police mistaked Carli( as we called him) for a known criminal in the area, and fired shots at him and his friends after they were told by police to leave the area. They then shot him in teh back, and as he lay there helpless on teh ground, they shot him more times. When people that were there asked the cops why they shot him, they said he had a gun. When the witnesses asked what gun, the cops had no reply. Neither Carli nor any of his friends had any weapons on them accroding to eyes witnesses…i just hope the crooked and currupt police officers in Jamaica don’t get to the eye witnesses before they are given teh chance to tell what REALLy happen…. RIP Carli, my sincere condolences to Spragga and the fam

  • Oh man! That’s really awful! Okay, well that definitely sheds some light on the story. I mean,
the woman who commented first stated that
he was a bright young man and I would have
been hard pressed to deduct that from the report
that either he or his friend were a) carrying a gun and b) firing it at the police.

Let’s pray that things get put in order. This is truly
an eye opener to anyone, as I have stated, 17 is just
    way too young.

I will edit this post and direct readers to read the comments below to gain better insight into the
    story.

    Thank You.

  • The thing is everypne is so hasty to give their too cents no one cares about the actual facts about the story. I am actually his cousin and so i think i’m in a better position than you are to correctly assess the situation and btw Antwan almost every other person u come acroos in jamaica carries a gun and many do it just for protection but i’m digressing the fact is neither of them had a gun and neither shot at the police. It seems that the police men that stopped my cuz and his freind were actually drunk and bored and they also had guns which was very unfortunate. Nut don’t take my word for it the facts will come out in court. peace and anyone who plans on telling lies about wat happened for attention go suck u mada

  • wait, i’m lost did they have a gun or no?

you said, “the fact is neither of them had a gun and neither shot at the police”

and then you said, “my cuz and his freind were actually drunk and bored and they also had guns which was very unfortunate”

this get’s more complicated with each comment.
all i was saying really is that i think it’s sad that
this 17 year old is dead. that’s the point of the
whole thing. whether he had a gun or not, i guess
i will have to wait until the “case” goes to court,
which if some of the other commentators are correct, won’t make a difference anyway because
the systems in jamaica are so corrupt anyway.

this post was in no way meant to offend anyone,
we over here can only go on what we are told.

    thank you for commenting yastashia.

  • I too am a relative of Carlyle, I am married to his cousin Booka who was very close with him. Whats up Apple (Yastashia). The whole thing is sad to hear about as the people who live in JA really know how it goes, police murder these innocent downtown people as they can. I said this before “pretty soon every mother downtown will loose her son” Carlyle nor his friend were carrying a gun it was a nasty set up and god will deal with the bad mind police in Jamaica. It shouldnt of been Carlyle, there was nothing badman about him for them to kill him off. R.I.P Carlyle we love you. Samita

  • P.S Yastashia means the police were bored and drunk. I know this for a fact as Iv been stopped by police on several occasions just to ask me stupid questions as they have nothing better to do. Im from England, before I moved to Jamaica I used to moan about British police from my experiences in JA, trust me I know I could go to a policeman in England and feel safe, i would never trust a jamaican policeman. Something needs to be done.

  • I usually don’t post comments when it comes to press websites. It is extremely imperative that you do enough research before you relay your opinion to the public. Realize that two of his family members felt they needed to respond. BTW I am so sorry for your loss. Now when it comes to police violence in Jamaica it is never ending. When you asked why they would be carrying a gun (which, from what eye witnesses say, they were not carrying) I chuckled to myself because your friends must not have given you an open eyed view of what individuals go through in Jamaica. I won’t get into it but i’m sure you would feel you needed to be protected as well if you lived in certain parts or even drove through certain areas. When it comes to the police, My father was pretty well known in Kingston and used to travel from the states back to JA and on one of his trips some of his police “friends” came to our house to rob my fathers valuables and drew guns on my brother (in his face) who was maybe 10 at the time and explained how they were going to kill him because he was telling them they were wrong. To show you how bold they are, they did this in their uniforms. Another situation, because cops wanted to get retaliation for someone in their camp who was murdered they were just killing people randomly that had nothing to do with it. My cousins fiancee and a good friend of mine had just went back home to JA when the cops pulled them over took them to a field placed them in handcuffs and tortured my friend and murdered him in such a way that the position of his friend who was murdered second and had to watch it all was frozen in a state of fear when they viewed the body. They made up some excuse and would have gotten away with it but a witness just so happened to see them being put in handcuffs and placed in the car complying in the same way that spragga’s son did and the same witness said later she was at the hospital and saw the two bodies in the back of the police car. I don’t believe there was much these victims could have done from the backseat in handcuffs that would lead these officers to believe they needed to protect themselves by killing them. Its extremely unfortunate but I believe it is our job to inform those who have no sense of what is going on. We don’t always have an avenue or the strength to express what we have experienced or our loved ones have experienced, but we have to educate.

  • dem plant de fuckin gun pon de yout to rasclaat, u mussee nuh kno nuttin bout jamaica a so it go. wha yuh jus write pon here is a disgrace, de yout dead an gone but yuh nuh fi mek fun a di situation. Honour Carlton Grant Jr. he was one good yout outa millions gone bad. an u antwan need fi get ur fuckin facts str8 before u go postin shit on the internet u must be a fan of babylon injustice fi gwaan so. it coulda happen to anybody, babylon nuh discriminate

  • Antwan, being unaware is ok many in jamaica are as well. I rispec the fact that you appear willing to learn. If you or anyone else wants to know what really happened that night go to youtube.com and search” Carlton Grant Spragga” and you will see the account of the murder witness who is now on the run becuase the police will kill him. The witness is the other yute that was on the bicycle, he was Carltons friend from school also 17 yrs and had also just received 6 passes in CXC exams, that puts both of them in the top 10% of boys taking that exam in Jamaica. It was a cold blooded murder watch the video and feel the truth curl your blood.

  • First, as I forgot to mention due to time constraints, respect and prayers to the family of Carlton Grant Jr. When I posted my comment on this senseless, murder is was my mistake not to put “alledged” when referring to who possibly had a weapon which I do not believe that either had. That youtube video that surfaced is horrifying that this young man has to run and hide due to the highly corrupt Jamaican justice system. But one thing that I do know for certian is that this young man did not deserve this. I don’t know the family personally but my heart goes out to all of you and anyone else who has lost a loved one in this manner. Having been to Jamaica and seeing how the cops opperate first hand, I can say that they do not act in the best interest of the people who they are supposed to protect. This needs to be put front and center for the world to see and to stop this from occuring.

  • Which part uno bon? A weh yu dunno how policeman dem a roll? Becah dem pusswhole a dem a seh dat di yute dem hab gun dat dem hab it?
Whole heap a people dem dun murda every day second and hour inna yard. You muss know dat Carli was a good yute, a weh ‘imma care bout ‘im studies. family and future. ‘Imma just go out a road wit’im friend dem same way all yute dem a gwaan. Nah tek time fi di media, becah di whole a dem fi bun dem. Fiya bun Babylon dem. Wata cleanse di pain fram Spragga’s soul.

  • furst of all Carlyle wuzn n2 violence he wuz very sweet bright very cute ..n datz nah n hiz character..ilove him so much n immah miss him lyke crazy:(

  • I was also a very close friend of carlyle’s some1 he came to talk to when he wasn’t sure what to do…

i am more than saddened by the whole thing and taking each day to accept that he’s gone. I remember him everyday and it’s driving me crazy that he’s never coming back

it is ok antwan that u posted this you were just using your publicizing skills and you like every one else may never know what really happened that night near his mother’s residence in Downtown, Jamaica. but i do think it’s time to cease the ‘heated’ discussions on what happend. the policeman was indeed charged for murder though and me like many other citizens of the country believe this was what was right and all that could be done. I pray for Spragga and the rest of the family because if what i’m feeling is less than the sorrow they’re experiencing i don’t know how i could manage. Also to Sharon . his mum
    Be strong.
Everythin happens for a reason right? n he did what he was put on this earth for he touched the hearts of many n left an impression on even those who were not fond of him. He was never afraid to say or do what he felt. Was too care-free for second thoughts. Thats the way most people of this world should be … without the fake smiles and such.

Rest In Peace Carlton Kymani Grant

  • It’s just said that Carlton was murdered for no reason at all. This 17 year old boy should of been kicking it with his father and chillin with his home boys are talking to his girlfriend, but instead he lost his life to Jamaican cops. I’ve lost of friend (Sean Bell, of New York) to a 50 bullet shot by NYPD they also said that Sean had a gun and when the searched the car no gun was found nothing that just opened fire and it’s fucked up that so many of our men is dying in the hands of police officers when will this stop. Spragga, my condolence goes out to you and your family keep ya head up…just know that Carlton is always watching over you he his sleeping with the angels now.
